Research initiatives in the field of Paleontology have led to major discoveries of important fossils hominoids at Moroto and Napak ranging between 16 million to 20 million years old, that share post cranial features with the current humans. The specimens are key in understanding the Evolution of humankind in Africa.

Under the Museums and Monuments Act, 2023, the Department shall protect and maintain all palaeontological or archaeological sites, materials, or shipwrecks in the territorial waters of Uganda. All protected palaeontological objects are the property of Uganda and shall be deposited in a museum.

A person who discovers palaeontological and archaeological objects or materials in the course of development or agricultural activity shall report findings to a police officer or local government within forty-eight hours.
