Kampala, Central Region
From the National Museums and Monuments Policy, 2015:
———————————————————————-
Kasubi Royal Tombs is listed among the gazetted national cultural sites and monuments of Uganda.
Kasubi Tombs is one of Uganda’s three World Heritage Sites, and the only cultural World Heritage Site (the other two being natural: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mount Rwenzori National Park).
Kasubi Tombs was listed as a “Site in Danger” on the World Heritage List in 2011 following a fire disaster on 16th March 2010.
The UNESCO Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, 1972 encourages State Parties to protect objects of cultural and natural heritage of outstanding universal value. Kasubi Tombs is protected under this convention.
Tourist arrivals at Kasubi Royal Tombs have doubled over the past years, contributing significantly to Uganda’s cultural tourism economy.
The tombs are part of Buganda Kingdom’s royal burial grounds — burial grounds of cultural or traditional institutions that remain the property of the respective institutions which maintain and manage them.
Under the Museums and Monuments Act, 2023, burial grounds and graves of national heroes shall be declared preserved and protected objects, and burial grounds of cultural or traditional institutions shall remain the property of the respective institutions.
