UGANDA MARTYRS SHRINE (NAMUGONGO)
Namugongo, Wakiso District
From the National Museums and Monuments Policy, 2015:
———————————————————————-
The Uganda Martyrs Shrine is listed among the gazetted national cultural sites and monuments of Uganda.
It is a memorial site related to the Uganda Martyrs — Christian converts who were executed for their faith.
The Policy also mentions that memorial sites are part of the cross section of cultural resources inventoried in the National Database system, including memorial sites “related to massacres during the troubled times of the country.”
Under the Museums and Monuments Act, 2023, the Department of Museums and Monuments shall identify and record graves of victims of conflict and may erect and maintain memorials associated with those graves.
The Policy also lists support for “religious shrines and cathedrals” among the strategies for cultural heritage preservation.
